Ramen Jiro, known as the origin of Jiro-style ramen, is located in Ichijoji, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. The main store is in Mita, Tokyo.
The defining feature of Jiro-style ramen is undoubtedly its portion size. Even the standard serving is equivalent to a large serving elsewhere. You can also order extra meat and vegetables, known as “mashimashi,” making the portion so large that you need to be prepared to eat it.
The noodles are also distinctive, thick and rough, with a firm texture that is surprisingly addictive. The pork on top is notable for its blocky appearance, cooked so tender that it falls apart. Among all the chashu (braised pork) I’ve had in ramen, I personally prefer the Jiro-style chashu the most.
The soup is rich with a pork-based broth, packing a punch. All of these elements come together in one bowl, so make sure to give it a try.
Due to its large portions, I recommend that women consider ordering the regular size or even half. It’s one of the more indulgent dishes in Japanese cuisine, so if you’re curious, definitely give it a try.
