Located in Kamigamo, Kita-ku, Kyoto, Kamigamo Kirin offers an obanzai buffet featuring vegetables carefully selected by a vegetable sommelier.
Having heard the news that a sister restaurant in Ohara had opened a new branch in Kamigamo, I had always wanted to visit. When my wife had a day off, we decided to go for lunch. Since it was a weekday, we were able to get in without a reservation.
The restaurant operates on a two-time slot system with seating starting at 11:00 and 12:30. As we arrived at an odd time, the staff informed us that our dining time would be shorter. Since we weren’t planning to eat too much, we decided to go ahead.
The interior features a large central table surrounded by seating, giving it a communal feel. With plenty of wood and greenery, the atmosphere is very natural.
The meal includes four fixed dishes (shumai, dashimaki tamago, tonjiru, and warabi mochi on the day we visited) and onigiri as part of the fixed menu, along with an obanzai buffet of a dozen or so items. Although the onigiri and tonjiru are fixed menu items, they are available for unlimited refills.
Everything was delicious, but I particularly enjoyed the eggplant and tofu. There was also keema curry, which was surprisingly spicy and made me sweat.
We were very satisfied, but those with bigger appetites, especially teenage boys, might be disappointed by the lack of meat. It’s more suited for women and people of our age group.
While the vegetables and dishes were delicious, we felt that the price was a bit high for lunch, so I rated it 3.5 stars.

Everything was delicious, but I particularly enjoyed the eggplant and tofu. These two items stood out for their exceptional natural flavors. The tofu, in particular, was so good that I recommend eating it plain, without any seasoning.
The keema curry was also delicious, but it was unexpectedly spicy and made me sweat a lot. For those who tend to sweat easily, it might be challenging without a towel.
While the dishes are typical obanzai fare, each had a unique flavor twist that made them special and worth noting.
I must admit, I was a bit of a bad customer because I wanted to eat a mountain of that tofu.
Payment Amount
The total bill for my wife and me was 6,000 yen. It was a bit luxurious for lunch, but worth it for a special occasion.
The food was also delicious.
